Galway October Race meeting 2011

Galway October Race meeting

The excitement of last Saturday’s horse racing at the famous Ballybrit Racecourse still lingers in my mind. No doubt, this is due in no small part, to my early days in Ballinrobe. Here we had an annual Race Meeting, attended by young and old alike. On Saturday I felt that same old excitement and our members in attendance were not disappointed.
As our photos show, we had a lovely gourmet meal in the Killanin Stand and a wonderful day’s horse racing. It was great fun discussing the horses, especially as our knowledge of them was absolutely nil. Placing our bets and then watching carefully the race, together with jockey’s colour and number at hand was really good fun. Although none of us became rich, as a result of our day’s racing, we actually didn’t do too badly at all. We had two experienced turf accountants at our table to guide us (so thank you Anne and Cecelia!).
We now look forward to our next outing, the Ara-go-on Celebration in Salthill Hotel Galway.

Colm Wilkinson's Concert Last Sunday evening, July 17th, we travelled by bus to Tullamore to attend a concert given by one of Ireland’s greatest entertainers - musical theatre actor and singer Colm Wilkinson. The concert was held in the Tullamore Court Hotel. After a delicious meal in the hotel, we had a night to remember with Colm Wilkinson in concert. The audience of eight to nine hundred people were delighted and enthralled with old favourites and new songs rendered in his own inimitable style. Between songs he shared with us his memories of growing up in Dublin in a family of 10 during the 1950’s. His mother played the violin and was involved in opera while his father played the banjo and piano. He also sang. Colm’s signature song “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables” is such a beautiful melody and sounds very spiritual. His orchestra of seven accompanied Colm through his various music selections - musical theatre, jazz, blues, rock and roll and his Irish songs “Danny Boy” and “Whiskey in the Jar” which especially delighted the audience. His two guest singers gave him a well-earned rest between songs. He performed Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah” and encouraged the audience to sing along and clap their hands. He also performed songs from shows such as “Phantom of the Opera”, especially memorable of course was “Music of the Night”. Music-lovers everywhere have enjoyed his songs and music. He told us of singing at Senator Edward Kennedy’s recent birthday party and how he also sang for President Barack Obama. His songs kept reverberating in our minds for days afterwards. His many fans in attendance were loud in their applause and everyone was reluctant to leave at the end of a perfect evening’s entertainment. Bridie Loughman
